Freckles & a Red Pen

How do we stop the Mississippi from flooding or the wind from howling down our door?

We start somewhere.

We learn.
Pray.
Plan.
Execute.
Stay vigilant.
Help our neighbors.
Pitch in when a stranger is in trouble.

We let compassion enlarge our community
because we know that one day we may be asking
for help and rescue.

We stand with others
who want to DO SOMETHING
so that in our doing
we no longer feel like the Lone Ranger

We draw an imperfect red "X" on our hand
snap a picture
and send it through the grand canyons
of social media.

And then we go back to learning, praying, planning, executing, vigilance, helping, pitching in, and enlarging our community so that we live out this pledge (and all the other noble pledges we make) rather than merely join in to a fad.

We become doers of the Word of life and love and liberty…freedom, rather than merely hearers of it.

It is easy to draw a red letter on our hands
Or wave a sign
Or walk alone for life.

It is so much harder to get involved in the messiness and overwhelm that is life as a slave.

Slave to a human master.
Slave to sin.
Slave to fear and regret.
Slave to greed.
Slave to approval.
Slave to inaction…apathy.
Slave to not knowing.

But what are we if we only draw on our hands and fail to act?

Children playing a child's game
Looking for attention in
Collective behavior.

What can we do now?
