What did you dream about when you were younger?
Drumming Inna Gadda da Vida with Iron Butterfly at the Palladium?
Skiing on the Olympic downhill or X-Games team?
Writing or acting in the greatest story ever told?
Yep, me too.
I had a big crush on a dead boy king…(born in Arizona, moved to Caledonia…King Tut) and really wanted to become an archeologist, an author, and an adventurer.
In fact, I dreamt a lot; usually at school during math or grammar (can you tell?) – anything that required rote learning. I'm not creative, I'm resourceful by necessity – I could NEVER focus in on the rules. It was always freestyle for me. And so went my dreams…freestyle. Often, I flew.
I flew over rivers, streams, snow-peaked mountains, fields, friends, stars, pyramids, and Hobbit houses. My favorite scene of all the Disney movies is Aladdin's flying carpet ride! Flying…still better than peanut butter & chocolate.
Even now, when days get foggy and drip in worry or wondering, I will ask for a flying dream before night envelops.
What is it about flying and dreaming that is so sweet and why do we relegate it to the stuff of childhood?
"Without vision, the people perish" says the proverb. Vision has to start somewhere.
Adventures launched an 11 countries in 11 months "race" a few years back. The World Race now sends 500ish 21 – 35 year olds into the poorest and most desperate places on earth to help nurture change in the communities and in the go-ers. It began with an idea and a dream and became this remarkable movement.
You've heard my Kingdom Dream…wanting to live out this life with a hand to hold, to be available, to write, and to travel- with intention. Is this a dream or wishful thinking? I don't know. But I will keep humming I'll fly away and hope for substance to these things I do not see.
And I invite you to dream. To sit back, watch the clouds morph overhead, and dream; maybe to gather courage and bend your knees to seek a dream bigger than yourself.
To be honest: my dream of a happy marriage of faith and writing and travel and being Available to people – is truly bigger than me. If God can nurture this thing – this dream – in me, I can only imagine what good dreams he has for you.
So, it's time to log off, turn off the electronics, sit back or go for a run or a swim; and dream a little. I'd love to hear what you are dreaming about.
In the meantime, I'll be flying.
